I'm no expert on water pollution, but there are several links this non-expert can think of:

1) Groundwater pollution is a major source of concern from landfills (1 of recycling's 2 chief waste management competitors);
2) Pollutant deposition to water from incineration, from extraction, from manufacturing, etc. may be avoided;
3) Recycling as a mindset in an industry (concerning its nonhazardous waste) gets that industry thinking about avoiding wastes and byproducts (in its industrial and hazardous wastes), which wastewater is a major component of in many industries (e.g. paper manufacturing).
