Subject: starting a new recycling center

I am a student at Truman State in Kirksville, MO. I am doing a speech on recycling in our town and I have a couple of questions. Our local recycling center closed down recently, and the nearest one is 30 miles away, in Unionville. This is inconvenient for students and for the residents of Kirksville. Residents in Kirksville are still urged to use their recycling bins, but the question is posed, where is the waste going if there is no recycling center? Our guess is to the same place as all of the other garbage. What can I do to get information on how we can conveniently recycle, and how I can find out where our garbage is going (last resort being following the garbage truck) :)
