Subject: 9-Track/Magnetic Tapes

Are there any specific state (Massachusetts) or national laws/regulations governing magnetic tapes (specifically 9-track) to be recycled? I have received conflicting information from two agencies that specialize in this field. One indicated to me that 9-track tapes are environmentally sound and can be thrown away. Any and all help would greatly be appreciated.
