In the US, we recovered (recycle+compost) 28.2% of municipal
solid waste in 1998 (USEPA Waste Characterization).

Doing the math... if we completely got rid of all composting
and recycling programs, the result would be that we would
increase the fraction of waste disposed of from 71.8% to
100%. This represents an increase in disposal of
(100-71.8)/71.8, or 39.3%. The numbers would be a little
different if you just got rid of recycling and not
composting.
