Hi.
I bet the Frequently Asked Questions would be a
good place to look for some answers to this question.
Also, Ackerman's 1997 book titled Why do we
recycle.

A quick answer: It usually saves energy, usually
produces less emissions, elongates landfill life,
and saves raw materials for future generations.
