In the US, whether the materials are made from virgin or recycled resins, the symbol is not with the past but with the future: recyclability will be based on identification of the resin in the future.

As to the Benelux countries: If they are using the triangular chasing arrows surrounding the 1-7 numerical system of SPI, then they are using the same system.

However, there are different European codings instituted.

I don't know if they correspond to the SPI codes, but both Germany and France did have codings for recyclable materials, especially for plastics in the early part of this decade. I would get in touch with the International Solid Wastes Assn. to find out the status of these and other coding systems.
