Trommel screens and vibration devices, optical scanners and other devices are mechanized means of sorting out various materials in mixed solid waste into their component fractions.

Handbook: Material Recovery Facilities for Municipal Solid Waste, by US EPA ORD, EPA/625/6-91-031 (9/91)

Environmental, Economic and Energy IImpacts of Material Recovery Facilities, by US EPA ORD, EPA/600/R-95-125 (8/95).

The annual buyers guide of Waste Age magazine is one directory of vendors of the needed technology to furnish the most up-to-date sorting technology.
