Dear Tina,

How much household waste is generated?

In 1996, the US generated a per capita discard rate of 4.3 lbs per person per day, which after all forms of recovery works out to 3.2 lbs per person.

What % is recycled?

Nationwide, 27%

What percentage of Americans recycle?

We don't really know. There were about 19,000 programs nationwide in 1996 including all of the large cities of the US. 9,000 of these were curbside programs whose average participation rate is about 45%.
