Dear Steve,

I believe that you're on the right track: wood ash can be used on certain kinds of soil for certain kinds of results. I don't think that large quantities can be composted, but, no agricultural expert, I might be incorrect. That's why I would recommend that you contact your most local Agricultural Cooperative Extension Service. I believe that they know this type of question's response very well/
