Dear Mark Sutherland,

I do not know a great deal about waste management in Australia. What I do know is that they have instituted Materials Recovery Facilities which do require some souce separation and that was in response to a 1994 goal of cutting the waste stream in half from a 13.7 million ton level. At the time 25% of the total waste stream of 3.5 million tons was recycled. The program nationally is directed by the EPA in Victoria. A good local program is that of the city of Sydney. A good source of info in the past has been:

McIntyre Associates, PO Box 486, Brisbane Roma St 4003 Queensland, Australia
