Dear Drew Scherer,

217 million tons of municipal solid waste was generated in the US in 1997. 28% of that was recycled, the rest being landfilled or incinerated. Potentially about 90% of it is recyclable. The highest percentage attained by a large community thus far in the US is approximately 66%.
